Connection between a theme of the story and the real world.
A big theme we've all talked about is how we readers overlooked the fact that most of the story was a dream, because we wanted it to be real. All the foreshadowing we could see was obvious after we knew the ending. I'm going to link that to today's media and American's watching it. That's right bringing in politics (sort of).
Today we see the media showing all sorts of different stories especially with big issues of the current time. But they purposely leave out many stories that either go against what they want or call them out for their actions. And American's all over the country watching it don't try to go find those stories. The biggest place we see this is with the black lives matter movement/protests (read riots). there's rioting and killing around the US but if you turn on your television you will most likely see a police officer arresting someone or shooting someone. What you won't see is the 10 minutes before where the person being arrested was doing a crime that got him in that position. I think American's today want reform but don't want to hear about criminals and rioters they just want what they want right now and nothing else matters.
Wow! That's a really great connection, Justin, especially since it's election day. Bierce manipulates us just like the main stream media & social media manipulate us.
ReplyDeleteThat's really true, Justin. I have noticed the same thing and people know that the news isn't reporting truth but they don't really care because they want it to be true.-Ethan H.

ReplyDeleteThey don't really care what other people think or feel. And then when they get caught for something bad they blame the people who are trying to keep peace. Can you imagine? It'd be so hard to be a policeman/woman right now.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really good point, Justin. In this day and age, media censorship is a huge problem. You can't expect people to make well-informed conclusions and decisions when they are missing massive amounts of relevant information.
